The Harlequin Theatre opened as a live theatre in December 1986. It was designed by the architectural firm Building Design Projects, theatre consultant was J. Wyckham Associates. It is funded and operated by the local council. Seating was provided for 494.

Since 1985, a 100 seat cinema auditorium has been added and this is now in regular use as a first run cinema. Films can also be screened in the main theatre.
