In the early 70’s, there were two adult movie theaters on Gay Street. Besides the Bijou, which was then showing X-rated movies, there was also the Gay Street Cinema. I can’t remember the exact address, but it was several blocks north of the Bijou, on the same side of the street. The building it was in did not look as though it had been built as a theater. I don’t know when it opened or closed. Despite the name, they showed straight, not gay, movies.

I found the information below on the Gay Street Cinema on this website.

Gay Street Cinema, 215 S. Gay, 1969

The building also housed “Film Amusements Inc.” Local theater expert Wallace Baumann recalls that “Deep Throat” played there, and the newspapers reported long lines of would-be patrons waiting outside the theater. This address was demolished for the construction of Summit Hill Drive.

Among the 28 businesses that lost their buildings were El Rocco Club; Rainbow Club; Fielden’s; Faith Apostolic Church; Monday Real Estate; and Rentenbach Construction. The old Lawson McGhee library building was also torn down during this road design project.
