Tivoli Cinema Wimborne

These original two light fittings survived the 1950’s so called modernisation, and miraculously survived intact and undamaged possibly because they were fixed to the ceiling at the bottom and top of the circle staircase. Manufactured by Hailwood & Ackroyd of Morley Leeds, who were prolific and innovative in making decorative lighting during the 1920’s and 1930’s specialising in cased glass. This Charioteer design first went into production in 1928 influenced by the epic film Ben Hur the MGM silent film starring Ramon Novarro, which was first released at the Tivoli London in 1926. Many cinema architects and owners used the Hailware catalogues to select suitable light fittings for cinema interiors throughout the interwar period. Each cased panel has the moulded ‘Hailware’ trade mark.
