The town of Bitterne, on the eastern outskirts of Southampton, is named after a bird and was thus given to the cinema and a nearby local pub.

The former Bitterne Cinema was originally a local chapel that was built in 1823.

Notes from Kelly’s Directories were provided by 86 year-old historian Reg Goldsmith of Totton.
