The American Theatre opened around 1915. It may have had a fraternal or public hall on the upper floor. It was taken over by the Strand Amusement Company in 1929. It closed as theatre on June 24, 1964 and was converted to retail use.

I found it open when I passed by the other day but I only had a chance to glance upstairs at a band rehearsing for the coming service and there were office ceiling tiles above and it just felt like a room. I’m guessing there’s a huge congregation room underneath and I have to go back from a Sunday-Tuesday at 7pm.

There’s a picture on page 74 in Images of America: Bridgeport, but the facade now has changed from when it first opened. The one in the book has tall half circle arches on street level.

This was probably the last motion picture house in the world to show “The bowery Boys Meet The Monsters” shortly before its demise!

To whom it may concern,
Im doing a project on Bridgeports theatres and I need information that talks about the history, when they where built, where are some of the anthentics, who was involved or responsible for each theatre, and what happened to the person, place, or thing. If you can add this information to each theatre in Brgdgeport that would be very helpful for everyone. Thank You for haering my thought. If you can contact me at this email address
