Pickwick is the former name of the Pick Theatre. The Pickwick Theatre dates back to 1909. The theatre was remodeled and opened as the Pick Theatre on the date given above. The modern address would be around 105 East Franklin Street.

The Pickwick was at 11 East Franklin St. Not sure if it was the same theatre as the Pick, though.

A single-line item in Boxoffice of September 17, 1938, datelined Chapel Hill, reads: “The Pickwick Theatre is being remodeled.” Could the Pick be the same theater, wick-less?

In his book ‘African American Theatre Buildings’ Eric Leddel Smith lists the Hollywood Theatre and the Standard Theatre as African American Theatres in Chapel Hill, NC. The Hollywood between the years 1949-1955 and the Standard between 1931-1950.

Wasn’t this the only theatre that permitted African-Americans in Chapel Hill? I read somewhere that this was the “colored” theatre in town between Chapel Hill and Carrboro.
