Magic Theatre, Nevada City CA

This theater has been showing independent films for over twenty years. It is also host to the Nevada City Film Festival. It was closed for refurbishment May 12, 2016 and is planned to reopen as a twin screen movie theatre in late-January/early-February 2018 renamed Onyx Theatre.

Closing on May 12 for remodeling. Let’s hope it’s only temporary.

Hi Trolleyguy…we are definitely going to be re-opening. Looks like late August at this point but we are undergoing a major transformation and it will be beautiful when we are done.

The Magic Theatre (since renamed the “Onyx” by its current owners) made its debut circa 1980 (by founder-manager Ross Woodbury) and bounced through several locations before settling into its current address. It was known for its comfy, informal decor and its eclectic programming, featuring many free films and family matinees, as well as the usual array of foreign films, classics and documentaries.
