Studio Theater

Originally opened in 1929 as the Strand Theater. It was remodeled in 1964 and re-opened as the Studio Theater with its seating reduced to 1,000 from its original 1,800. It closed in 1988.

The theater is scheduled for demolition by the end of 2009 but was delayed and demolition began May 21, 2018.

Here is a 1994 photo of the Studio Theatre. The same year, this photo was made, showing the stage house.

A couple of web sites say that the reason the Studio didn’t get demolished in 2009 was because the city, which owns the building, couldn’t afford the expense. A lot of cities can’t afford to restore old theaters, but Middletown can’t even afford to knock one down.

The Strand Theatre that opened in 1929 was actually the second Strand Theatre at this address. The first was a smaller theater that opened on March 12, 1922. Here is a drawing of the first Strand.
