The Gem Theatre was opened in 1917. Later becoming the Mantis Theatre, it change of name to American Theater dates back to at least 1930. Listed in the 1951 Film Daily Yearbook but not in the 1955 edition.
After closing it was used as a workshop, and was demolished in November 2012.

This was the building in 1985.
Chepke Restoration is now housed in the building according to a sign on the side of the building facing the railroad tracks.
