This is a photo of a painting by a local artist. During the war years there was a naval training camp just outside Pwllheli called HMS Glendower, hence all the sailors in the picture. After the war it became Butlin’s Holiday Camp, & now it’s called Hafan Y Mor (Haven)

Wow! What a fabulous painting. I must confess I didn’t know about HMS Glendower – although, of course,I knew Butlins. I wonder who owns this painting now? It’s marvellous; a real collectors item – and so evocative of the times. Thanks so much for posting it Eric.

The Duke Of Edinburgh was stationed there, also an RAF training camp at Penyberth Penrhos, which was even nearer to town. All these servicemen & women meant excellent business for the 2 cinemas in town.

Fascinating to see the painting of the Palladium, as Ordinary Seaman, D/JX 540875,Lindop , John , training at HMS Glendower , I was certainly in that queue with Aileen Hughes who lived in Nefyn. Those were the days ?
