Gloria Theatre...Myrtle Beach South Carolina

The Gloria Theatre opened in 1940 with a seating capacity of 498. Wilbey-Kincey (Paramount-Publix) operated the Gloria Theatre from 1940 until 1976. It was enlarged by adding a balcony in 1947. The Gloria Theatre was also for some exclusive roadshow enagements. "The Sound Of Music" was a crowd favorite when it played here during its exclusive engagement in the mid-1960’s.

It was renamed Fox Theatre on June 3, 1972 and closed in 1978.

Please note the discriminatory message on the bottom of both playbills that were added above by Don Lewis. This playbill was from 1959.

Times have sure changed in the last 50 years, I remember the Loews and Paramount in Nashville having “Colored Balconys” back in the day.

I was born in Myrtle Beach and watched many movies at the Gloria Theater. I love seeing it again.

The address for this theater was 210 9th ave N. The building at that address now looks like it is a remodeled version of the old Gloria shell. It appears the old ticket window and side entrance to the balcony for blacks is intact on the left front corner.

The November 15, 1947, issue of Motion Picture Herald said that the Gloria Theatre was being enlarged:

“The owners of the Gloria theatre at Myrtle Beach, S. C, have started work on alterations and improvement. A balcony will be added to increase the capacity to 800, and new sound and projection equipment will be installed.”
This web page has a photo of the Gloria Theatre, and also says that the house was listed in city directories as the Gloria Theatre from 1959 to 1972, but was listed as the Fox Theatre in 1974-1978.
