Built with taxpayer dollars, the Empire 20 opened in 1999 located next door to the historic 1928 California Theatre, now a performing arts center.
With the bankruptcy of CinemaStar, the City of San Bernardino struck an agreement with Maya Cinemas to renovate the megaplex. Maya gutted the theater as part of the work to install stadium seating and install an IMAX screen but then withdrew from the project. The city has been negotiating with other operators to complete the work and reopen the complex.

It is an amc design. Identical to all mid 90’s megas. This particular unit is a direct clone of Puente 20, sans the large lobby due to Puente being inside a mall.
Theatre 9,which seemed to be the largest of the 20 auds, had wheelchair seating in the back which was accessible via elevator.
In January 2011,Regal will sign a deal to take over the theatre.
It will lose six of the twenty screens to make way for other uses such as restaurants, etc.
It should be “E” Street, not “East Street” in the header.
This will reopen next year as Regal San Bernardino Theatre Square 14 with RPX.
Excuse me for being uneducated, but what is RPX? Thanks.
RPX is Regal’s version of a large-screen theatre similar to the new smaller Imax installations.
The agreement with Regal to operate the theater has apparently been finalized after months of delay; Regal will brand it as the Regal Stadium 14; six screens will be closed and the space made available for retail according to this article:

I wonder why Regal put it on thier website when the deal, apparently, hadn’t been finalized. Also,i guess it won’t be a Regal/Edwards house after all.
Construction work is well underway by Regal to convert the theater to a 14-screener with one of the company’s RPX screens. Here is an article with a photo.
