The Ellen Theatre was opened in 1911. In 1917 it was renamed Strand Theatre, operating with live performances. By 1925 it began its career as a movie theatre. Bt the early-1940’s it was operated by Paramount Pictures Inc. through their subsidiary Tracy Barham. It was last operated by Intermountain Theatres when it closed in 1961.

It has since been demolished.

The NRHP nomination form for the Provo Downtown Historic District says that this theater was built by John B. Ashton and opened as the Ellen Theatre in 1911. It was renamed the Strand in 1917.
