Empire Cinema

The Parkend Empire Cinema was Gloucester’s first purpose built cinema when it opened in early-1914. It had 350 seats and was designed by a Mr. Probyn.

It faced Park End Road at the corner of Farm Street, and the rear abutted the Midland Railway line from Birmingham to Bristol in this location about one mile from Gloucester city centre.

Never equipped with CinemaScope, it operated till 27th April 1957 when it closed screening Lex Barker in “Tarzan’s Savage Fury” and Rosalind Russell in “The Private Wore Skirts”. It was sold to the Elim Pentacostal Church, now the Elim Christian Centre.
