One of many gay porn theatres operating in the city in the 1970-1977 era. The Tom Kat Theatre was opened on February 12, 1969.

Today, the Parc 55 Hotel now sits on this entire block.

Wonder if the Tom Kat and Spartan were one and the same cinema? If I remember correctly, the auditorium of the Spartan exited onto Ellis, and would have been at the above address. The cruise area behind the screen could have once served as a lobby.

150 Mason would be just around the corner from 181 Ellis. So I still suspect that these two cinemas may have been the same, with different lobby locations.

The first ad for this appeared on April 16th, 1970. It can be found in the photo section.

Tom Kat of SF had opened on Feb.12, 1969. btw, I can’t see a cinematreasures entry for Pink Kat on 150 Mason St at Ellis, which had opened the year before. Both were Habib Carouba’s theatres.
