The Southland 75 Drive-In opened on November 25, 1964. It was opened by Chakeres Theatres and was equipped with 35mm and 70mm projectors. It was an open all year round theatre which at that time had the largest outdoor screen in Ohio, measuring 130 feet wide x 53 feet high. Les Lambert, manager of the theatre, stated on a good night, admissions could total 3,500 people. A second screen was added in the early-1980’s.
After the Southland 75 Drive-In closed on July 13, 1986, the smaller screen was moved to the Melody 49 Drive-In in Clayton, Ohio. After the Drayton Mall was constructed, property values in the area soared. The drive-in’s twenty acres of land, originally purchased for $125,000 in 1964 was worth over £2 million when it was sold in 1986. It is now home to the Southland 75 Shopping Center.
