Ridgecrest, a city with a population of over 27,000, is located in the high desert about 150 miles from Los Angeles. It is home to the China Lake Naval Air Weapons Station so the military plays an important role in its economy.

Thomas Berkes designed the theater, which opened in 1986 with five screens. The Ridgecrest Independent said three more stadium auditoriums opened in July of 2003. Thomas Berkes also designed the addition, which included a new concession stand, bathrooms and a playroom.

The Ridgecrest Cinemas is fortunate to have a captive audience with the closest competition in Tehacapi, about 75 miles away or for a Cinemark experience there is Victorville, about 90 miles away.

Operator Mike McGee, a local businessman, also makes the theater available to local charities to hold fundraisers. Part of the building was badly damaged in the 5th July 2019 earthquake.

An update on the Ridgecrest Cinemas' Facebook page this afternoon says that due to the collapse of the roof of theater 1 in the earthquake last Friday, building inspectors have red-tagged the entire structure. The cinemas are closed until further notice, though the owners do intend to open the undamaged section of the multiplex as soon as the safety of customers and staff can be guaranteed and official permission can be secured. Repairs will be made on the damaged parts of the building as soon as possible.

A brief video showing some of the damage can be seen at this link.
