VANDALS WRECK THEATRE.; Do $10,000 Damage to New $200,000 Brooklyn Movie House.
NY Times July 23, 1922
The Hollywood Theatre, a new motion picture house at Seventy-eighth Street and New Utrecht Avenue, Brooklyn, valued at $200,000, was unlawfully entered by vandals early yesterday morning according to police of the Bath Beach Precinct. The organ worth $2,500 had been ruined. The composition projection screen was torn and hacked to pieces. The operator’s box was opened and projection machines battered. The fire-escape door on New Utrecht had been forced with a jimmy. The owners could offer no explanation for the vandalism.
A building permit (NB 2988-21) for a new building was issued for this address in 1921. A c/o was issued for a new building on March 10, 1922. Purpose of building was a 1000 seat motion picture theater. No owner name given. An April 1927 c/o gives the owners name as Westminster Amusement Corp.
The address for the Hollywood Theatre is 7725 New Utrecht Avenue, Brooklyn, NY.
The Hollywood Theatre is located at the northeast corner of New Utrecht Avenue and 78th Street in Brooklyn, NY.
My grandmother’s house was around the corner from it since 1941.
For many decades until about 1999 it was The Hollywood Terrace catering hall. It retained its elegance till the end with it’s stylish glass entry doors, beautiful lobby, and plush carpeting.
