Born in the Sydney suburb of Balmain, Harris Brudenell-Woods (1881-1966) served in the Boer War as an officer with the 3rd Battalion Australian Horse (1902). In later years while practicing as a veterinary surgeon, at Inverell in country New South Wales, he developed an interest in the picture show business. Moving to Sydney he gathered a group of relatives, friends and other investors to form The Artarmon Picture Theatre Company Ltd. which was incorporated on 5th May 1923 with a nominal capital of £12,000. Construction tenders were called the next day. Plans for the brick cinema to be located at 38 Hampden Road had been lodged with the Chief Secretary’s Department for approval on 27th March.
