Palace Cinema

In Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, the New Palace Theatre was built on the site of the old Corn Exchange. It opened in 1908 (it was a very early cinema), but it closed in 1954, under the ownership of Hallking Cinema Co Ltd. of Cardiff. The building was converted into retail premises.

I have just seen a clip from the local paper which gives some more information about when this opened. I think it was 1908 as the New Palace Theatre.

The clip which is dated March 1908 reads (I can’t copy the image as it’s not mine).

“Cheltenham, New Palace Theatre, High Street. Most Central position in Town. Trams pass the doors every few minutes. Re-building Operations will COMMENCE IMMEDIATELY, and the Theatre POSITIVELY OPEN IN THE AUTUMN. Further particulars will shortly appear. Edward B Shenton Managing Director John Walters, Business Manager> Albert Winstanley, Architect, Manchester and St. Annes-on-Sea.
