Starlight Cinema

Otara Luxury Cinema was opened by Amalgamated Theatres on 16 September 1957. It was a well appointed cinema, complete with electronic organ, stereophonic sound and Bauer projectors, and included a modern-style coffee bar. The world premiere of veteran director Rudall Hayward’s feature film “To Love a Maori” was held here on 17th February 1972.

The cinema was renamed the Starlight Cinema in 1975. It was closed in 1992 and converted into a block of shops. It has since been demolished (approximately 2012/2013)and its last use was a car sales yard.

Amalgamated Theatres took an interest in 1983 then merged into South Auckland Cinemas in 1985 - a joint venture with Skyline Cinemas (KO & Amalgamated Theatres), Alan Meekings & Graeme Edwards. Leased to indie Graham Granger ( ex Mayfair Sandringham) when Village6 opened at Manukau City (5km away) in 1991.
