U.S. Naval Construction Battalion Center Gulfport Old Smith Memorial Theater

This base is a SeaBee base. SeaBee comes from fist letters of Construction Battalion. This theater was Building 341. The base suffered major damage by Hurricane Katrina in August, 2005. A new theater was being built and a Navy Exchange, (a Navy store like a Walmart) was to be built on the site of the theater. To speed construction up and in order to allow simultaneous construction of the theater and Navy Exchange the Navy agreed to allow demolition of the theater before the completion of the new theater. In the meantime, the installation of an inflatable gym (bubble) allowed exercise equipment to be moved out of the gymnasium which was converted into a theater. This all happened sometime between 2005 and before 2009.
