The Westgate Cinemas opened as a twin on December 20, 1978. It was operated by Marcus Theatres. Created out of a carved out section of a former JC Penney department store.
Located in the fading Westgate Mall it became a quad screen. Toward the end they tried art films, Bollywood, stand-up comedy, and serving drinks in order to stay open. Due to competition for the art/indie crowd from the nearby Sundance theatres, the Westgate Art Cinemas closed on December 14, 2008.
The closed theatre can still be seen down a lonely corridor in what remains of the mall, the poster boxes silently facing the hallway.
