In January 1925 John Lincoln converted a storeroom at 555-557 Broadway into what became the 575-seat Family Theatre, a single floor storefront type theatre. The Family Theatre was advertising at least as early as August 1926 and in 1928 it was equipped with a Robert-Morton organ. It was showing silent pictures until at least 1930. The Family Theatre had several different operators over the years. In March 1945 it was purchased from John Lincoln by Bernstein Theaters and they took a twenty year lease on the theatre for $200,000.

The theatre was remodeled and reopened as the Lake Theatre opened in 1947. It still seated 575 and operated with second run and third run movies with seat prices discounted to the first run Gary theatres (First run Gary was fourth run Chicago). It was listed as closed in 1952. The site is now a vacant lot.

Hammond-based Bernstein Theaters operated the Lake.

The Lake was open as early as 1945. In July 1945 operator Bernstein Theaters assigned a new manager to the “recently remodeled” Lake, so it wasn’t a newly built theater but was probably a preexisting one.

Lake predecessor Family Theatre had a Morton organ in 1928.
