Palace Theatre

The Bijou Theatre opened in the 1910’s. In October 1920 it was renovated and reopened as the Regent Theatre which operated until at least 1927. By 1931 it had reopened as the Palace Theatre. By 1941 it was operated by the Schine Circuit Inc. The Palace Theatre operated into the early-1950’s. It was demolished in 1986

The Bijou Theatre was operating at 27 E. Market Street by 1909, but sometime later moved to 35 W. Market. The Corning Evening Leader of October 4, 1920, said that the Bijou would close for two weeks after that night’s show and then, after renovations, would reopen as the Regent Theatre. The Regent was still in operation at least as late as 1927, but closed sometime after that and remained dark until reopening as the Palace.

My father was manager of the Palace Theatre from 1946 through 1952. His boss was Tobias ‘Toby’ Ross who was manager of the Fox Theatre and regional manager for Schine’s in the area. This ad that they put together for the theaters is from 1950. By that time, the third Schine theater in Corning, the State Theatre, had been closed. In the late 1940s, the government targeted Schine’s for monopoly and I have included an image of a newspaper article from the time.
