The Rogersville Theatre opened on October 31, 1935. Three years later the Rockwood Amusement Company was able to take over the rival Palace Theatre and close it, leaving their house as Rogersville’s only movie theatre.

Rogersville had a blue law forbidding the operation of theatres on Sunday. On the afternoon of Sunday, April 14, 1946, an undetected fire in the closed theatre led to an explosion which collapsed the roof and two walls of the building and damaged adjacent structures. The County’s public library, which was housed in the theatre building, was also a complete loss.

After the destruction of the Rogersville Theatre, the Rockwood Amusement Company built the larger Roxy Theatre on the same site, which had been enlarged by the acquisition of an adjacent lot.
