18th Street Theater

The Eighteenth Street Theatre opened in 1945. This theatre and the Lyric Theatre were the two main theatres in this neighborhood. Presumably both succumbed to the advent of TV.

The Eighteenth Street Theatre closed in 1961, and is now used as a storage warehouse.

So many theatres “succumbed to the advent of TV”.

Have any theater groups in Erie ever thought of restoring this theater to show old cartoons and newsreels? I have no idea what it would take to do this but I think it would be better than using it for storage. I suppose one has to be contented with the fact that it is used for something and hasn’t been torn down.

I enjoyed going to this theater. As is true of neighborhood movies houses it showed double features,a newsreel and a cartune. It seemed that they enjoyed showing singalong cartunes. It was a real fun place. No X rated shows here.
