The Bijou Theatre was opened prior to 1926 when it was listed with 500 seats. By 1936 the seating capacity had been reduced to 300. Around 1939 it was renamed Met Theatre with 250 seats and had an enormous sign out front which read “MET” in huge letters. A moviegoer new to town could scarcely fail to find it. It lasted into the 1950’s.

The Theatre Historical Society archive has the MGM Theatre Report for the Met; it’s Card # 398. Address is Main Street. Condition is Fair. The report says it opened in 1935, was showing MGM movies and had 296 seats. The 1940 population was 4,100.

The Met was a small cinema in a little town, yet it’s sign outside was huge! Some say it was also known as the “Metropolitan Theatre” but I’m not sure of that.

Originally known as the Bijou Theatre, it became the Met Theatre in 1939.
