Rock Cinema

In Mountsorrel, a village to the north of Leicester, the county town of Leicestershire, in the East Midlands. The Rock Cinema didn’t appear in Kelly’s Business Directories until 1932. However, in a 1958 newspaper article, G.G. Baum (who owned it with Jack Fisher) claimed it opened in 1928.

The Rock Cinema (assumed to be named after a well-known and clearly visible natural local feature) had a small balcony, reached by a wooden staircase. A small orchestra accompanied the silent films.

In the 1950’s the cinema became a dance hall two nights a week, with the occasional boxing match. Closing to films in 1958, it was sold to Blakesley Reid Ltd. and converted into an engineering factory. By January 2000, when I visited, it was occupied by Cardage Screen Printers.
