Kings Cinema

In East Cowes at the corner of Castle Street and Church Path, on the Isle of Wight. The Kings Cinema opened in 1935 with Wallace Beery in “Treasure Island”. The owner was Isle of Wight Theatres Ltd. and it had 800 seats in stalls and circle levels. The proscenium was 28ft wide. It was a ‘reverse’ cinema, which had the screen at the front of the building behind the foyer.

The Kings Cinema was still listed in the 1953 KYB and was closed in the late-1950’s.

When I visited, in July 2002, the building was occupied by GKN Aerospace. Since then, that area has been the subject of much redevelopment. Google Street View suggests that the cinema building has been demolished and replaced by a Waitrose supermarket that opened in November 2010.
