Chantry Cinema

In the north Lincolnshire town of Grimsby, the Chantry Cinema, built and owned by Leonard Bass, opened on 24th November 1920.

By the time of the 1953 Kinematograph Year Book, the owner was Eureka Picture Hall Ltd. of Hull.

The Chantry Cinema closed on 12th February 1957, following a small fire in the rear stalls, during the run of “Safari” starring Victor Mature and Janet Leigh. It never re-opened.

The two Kalee 8 projectors and the sound equipment were sold to the operator of the Marina Cinema at Lowestoft.

The building became a carpet warehouse. When I visited, in August 2002, Fair Deal Carpets were in occupation. According to Google Street View, Fair Deal Carpets is still operating in Cartergate. However, it appears that new buildings have been erected; the building that housed the Chantry Cinema is not visible, so it would appear it has been demolished and replaced by the current, more extensive, buildings.
