Westview Drive-In

Viewing: Photo | Street View

The Westview Drive-In opened 8th October 1970 at the corner of Mitchell Highway and Westview Street. The opening film was Clint Eastwood in “Kelly’s Heroes”. It closed in June 1984, but continued as a summer only operation until 1987. The drive-in site is still complete(the marquee sign is smashed, but still standing). The drive-in site is for sale, but no buyers after over 30+ years. In January 2017 work began restoring the Westview Drive-In by the Dubbo City Youth Council to re-open it 7-9th April 2017 as part of the National Youth Week Program.

The Dubbo Youth Council has arranged to reopen the West-View (according to the Daily Liberal newspaper) for a weekend in April 2017. The place is still for sale, and the sign looks even worst than the photo here. See http://www.dailyliberal.com.au/story/4391944/movies-to-return-to-dubbos-drive-in/ for the story, and http://www.dailyliberal.com.au/story/862369/return-of-the-drive-in/ for the way the sign looked in 2010.

Now I notice that only the 2010 story used a hyphen in the name. The 2017 story agrees with the spelling here. And I left a typo. Oops!

It closed as a regular venue in ‘84, but opened on Friday and Saturday nights during the 85/86, 86/87 and 87/88 summers. I was the projectionist for the 86/87 summer. I recall us showing the likes of Ferris Bueller and Croc Dundee.

I think the drive-in is between a prison(youth?) and a caravan park(other side of Westside Street)?

I see what you mean about the sign! You can’t read the name Westview Drive-in any more! I hope the sign gets fixed, not replaced!

The caravan park is called Westview Caravan Park.

The second night was “Grease” and “Dirty dancing”. The third night was Nightmare on Elm Street". Other screenings unknown? Further movie screenings unknown?

The movie screenings were for 3 days(not 5 days i think?) from 7/4/2017 to 9/4/2017.
