Located in the near South Side neighborhood of Douglas, near Dunbar Park, the Avenue Theater opened in 1913. It was located on Indiana Avenue, off 31st Street. The Avenue Theatre sat about 660 and featured vaudeville in its earliest years, before switching over to movies.

By the mid-1940’s, the Avenue Theatre was renamed the Terrace Theatre, and was in operation through most of the 1950’s before closing. It operated as an African American movie theatre. It has since been torn down.
