Located in the near South Side neighborhood of Douglas, near Dunbar Park, the Avenue Theatre opened in 1913. It was located on Indiana Avenue, off 31st Street. The Avenue Theatre seated 1,500 and featured vaudeville in its earliest years, before switching over to movies.

In 1940, the Avenue Theatre was renamed the Terrace Theatre, and was in operation through 1950 when it closed. It operated as an African American movie theatre. It has since been torn down.

The July 13, 1912 CONSTRUCTION NEWS said the 4-story 130x160 AVENUE Theatre building was built by scrap-iron dealers Israel and Samuel Lanski of 2117 S. Jefferson St. to also include a pre-leased Chinese restaurant, Turkish bath and bowling alleys. The architect was Bishop & Co. Seating was listed at 1,500.
