Sanborn Maps show a theater at this location as far back as 1918. The Liberty Theatre can be traced back to at least 1921 in The Port Arthur News under the name of the Pittman Theatre, owned by J.P (James) Pittman. Mr. Pittman came to Port Arthur in 1906 and retired in 1925 when he sold his Cameo Theatre and Liberty Theatre to the Jefferson Amusement Co., a subsidiary of Saenger Theatres.

On September 1, 1927, the Port Arthur News noted the Liberty Theatre, which was still owned by the Jefferson Amusement Co., had been vacant for more than a year. According to the local news, the arena at the theatre was still holding prize fights well into 1933.

As for Mr. Pittman, when he passed on in 1946 at the age of 91, the Port Arthur News noted that as a building contractor he built Port Arthur’s second theatre in 1907. Other theatres he previously owned were the People’s Theatre and Strand Theatre.

Status should be closed/demolished. The address tracks to a vacant lot.
