Cinema

East Harling is a village off the A11 to the north east of Thetford, Norfolk.

While on holiday in the area, a friend, David Weedon, noticed this residential building, called “The Old Cinema”. (The houses in this street have names, rather than numbers.) Perhaps not too surprisingly, I couldn’t find any references to a cinema in this village in the trade directories or cinema histories. Subsequent enquiries by David with local residents have revealed that the building was a club room for The Bull Inn (which has since closed) many years ago, and was, indeed, used for film shows in the early-1950’s, at least. Perhaps these were 16mm shows in the function room?

Judging by the exterior, especially the shape of the large window at the top on the front, the building could have started life as a chapel.

Enquiries are continuing, and I will add any further information that comes to light. For now, I have just called it “Cinema”.
