My grandfather's Cinema

Located in the village of Earby, near Barnoldswick, Lancashire on Water Street at School Lane. The Empire Cinema was opened in 1913. It had a 20ft wide proscenium. Around 1930 it was equipped with a Western Electric(WE) sound system. By 1934 it was presenting pictures, variety & revues. From around 1946 it was operated by M. Harley & Sons based in Barnoldswick. It was closed in 1960.

It was converted into a factory for the Ace Group maufacturing pressed metal cases and cabinets. It was destroyed by a fire in 1996. The Ace Group built a new factory on the site, with roughly the same shape and dimensions of the old cinema. In 1998 the Ace Group placed a plaque on the building commemorating that this was the site of the former Empire Cinema.
