The Filmdom Theatre was launched in 1914 as a silent motion picture house in downtown Gueydan. M.I. Ramsey was the publisher of the local newspaper, Gueydan Mayor, and ran the theatre for ten of its first 11 years. Abbeville’s Frank DeGraauw – owner of Frank’s Theatre – bought the theatre on October 21, 1925.

DeGraauw changed the theatre’s name to Frank’s Theatre and installed Vitaphone sound on December 1, 1928. Joy Houck bought the theatre and renamed it the Joy Theatre in 1938. On March 1, 1940, the theatre was destroyed by fire. It was replaced by a new Joy Theatre later that year.
