M.L. Yates opened the Empress Theatre in downtown Alturas in December of 1913. The Main Street theatre competed with the Orpheum Theatre for photoplay audiences and hosted some live events and dances. Mr. Yates considered equipping the venue for sound in 1929 but opted to convert the building to a mercantile building. They had architectural sketches for a new 700-seat theatre drawn but the onset of the Depression likely ended that project.
