Henry Sparks opened his New Theatre on the South Side of the Cooper Square. This was his third theatre and it launched September 4, 1922 with Ethel Clayton in the film, “Beyond”. The theatre was built in an existing two-story wood structure and retrofitted with a raised floor.

The theatre had a $2,000 organ and a gold fiber screen. Within a month, the theatre had its name, the Gem Theatre. It operated until the night of January 30, 1930 when a fire heavily damaged virtually the entire theatre. It was said that Sparks was rebuilding to re-open but that restoration appears to have stalled.
