Oxford Cinema

Located in Grimsby, Northeast Lincolnshire (Humberside). The Oxford Picture Palace was opened on 1st May 1913 when it was operated by T. Wiseman. By 1927 it had been re-named Oxford Picture House, still operated by T. Wiseman who was still the operator in 1931. It was listed as (Closed) in 1933, but reopened only to close for good on 15th June 1937 with Barbara Stanwyck in “The Bride Walks Out”.

It went into use as a dance hall, followed by use as an auto repair shop. The building was gutted by a fire in 1987 and was demolished around 1990. Housing has been built on the site.

I lived close by to this cinema as a child but did not realise its history until recently. My father recalls American troops frequenting the building when it was no longer a cinema but a dance hall during WW2. Indeed I recall it being a garage/tyre repair shop. The demolition site was later developed as houses rather than shops.
