Moving Pictures Cinema

Situated in the Elephant & Castle district of inner south London, Mercato Metropolitano, the brainchild of economist and chief dreamer Andrea Rasca, began with a pilot project in 2015 during the World Expo in Milan, which saw the regeneration of a disused railway station. Based around the values of craftsmanship, sustainability, urban renewal, good honest artisan food and real passion, the development was carefully planned to retain the site’s original appearance, which nurtured the local community’s affection for a special part of their urban history.

The concept proved successful, and this first British site opened in 2016, on the site of a disused paper factory.

With an area totalling 45,000 sq ft Mercato Metropolitano is home to more than 40 vendors, a micro-brewery and a number of community projects.

The boutique, independent, Moving Pictures Cinema launched in 2018.

Seating is unallocated and tiered with luxury armchairs and comfortable sofas.

In partnership with The Film Media Network, Moving Pictures Cinema runs masterclasses and courses on all aspects of film making. These range from producing, directing and writing to acting classes, in a space designed for “creative inspiration, education, learning and exploring”.

Unfortunately, this was a very short-lived cinema. It was closed in August 2019 and the space is to be taken over by an extension to the adjacent bar. However the cinema’s website (in late-August 2019) says “Moving Pictures Cinema is hoping to move to another location in the heart of London”. So, in due course, there might be another Cinema Treasures entry!

Mercano Metropolitano was previously home to pop-up cinema the Backyard Cinema during 2017, but not known if this was in the same space.
