Empire Palace Cinema

Located in Grimethorpe, to the northeast of Barnsley, South Yorkshire. The coal mining town is best know for the Grimethorpe Colliery Band, which featured in the 1996 film drama “Brassed Off” starring Pete Postlethwaite & Ewan McGregor, which was filmed on location in the town. The Cinema was opened by 1914. It was later renamed Picture Palace. By 1927 it had been re-named Empire Palace Cinema. By 1934 it had been equipped with a British Thompson-Houston(BTH) sound system. The proscenium was 32ft wide. It was still open in 1963, but had closed by 1966.
