News About This Theater

Century Stratford Square

This cinema opened March 9, 1981, and is located inside the Stratford Square Mall. This theater was originally opened by the Plitt Theater chain. It originally had eight screens but after Cineplex Odeon closed it down, they converted the lower level into retail. The Village Theaters chain re-opened screens 1-4 in 2000. In fall of 2005, the theater was closed for renovation and it re-opened as the sixteen-screen Century Stratford Square on 29th June 2007. It was closed in early-January 2022.

Re-opened as Century Stratford Square today. And while Bloomingdale is showing some of the same movies as Stratford, Stratford is showing the same movies and more in digital sound. That’s light years ahead from what Village Theatres offer. Maybe I’ll get down here & take photos sometime this month.

Is this actually the same building or did Century rebuild an entirely new theatre? If so, it’s somewhat misleading to re-name the information about the OLD Stratford Square to include the new theatre.

Went to the new Cinemark/Century Stratford Square today. The theater is beautiful. All 16 screens have digital sound and digital projection. Even though a few of the same movies are at the Blommingdale Theaters and the new Stratford Theater, the new Stratofrd Theater is presenting them in digital projection while the Bloomingdale is presenting them in traditional 35MM projection.

To Scott:

I belive Century took the fourplex, gutted it a little, and expanded into space next to it to create the 16 screener.

To Jimpiscitelli: Thanks for your report on the theater. I hope I can get out there sometime this month. Maybe when The Simpsons comes out.

I saw Sweeney Todd here yesterday. GREAT new theater. Sound was awesome. The chairs in the theater rock. The food counter was sort of a cafe stye line. Very clean and new. I much prefer this place over some other nearby theaters. I still miss the original 4 upstairs theaters at Stratford but it was time for them to go.

On a side note a saw an article about the Bloomingdale Court theaters and how they are successfully showing Baliwood movies. Maybe Bloomingdale Court will survive these new theaters at Stratford.

The old upstairs theaters were great~! I grew up going there in the 80’s and miss them very much,, especially what seemed like the enormous theater #1,, Anyway, the new Century theaters are fantastic,, All digital and great sightlines with all stadium seating,, I have been in at least 7 of the 16 theaters, some with capacity of 106 seates to the larger one with plus 250 seats and all are great! Highly recommend!!

Just went to see a movie in 3-D here and they charge a $3 surcharge PER TICKET! to see them in 3-D. I’ve seen 3-D movies elsewhere and never received such a surcharge. That is ridiculous! As a result, I will be going out of my way to see movies at OTHER neighboring theaters from now on in protest of this!
