Gainsborough Cinema

Located in the Holbeck district to the south of the city centre near the corner of Domestic Street and Sydenham Street. A conversion of a former chapel to the plans of architect Fred Mitchell. The Gainsborough Cinema was opened on 4th February 1931. The chapel had been in use since 1927 by Electrochord Ltd. as a studio for making short sound films, and the cinema was equipped with an Electrochord sound system. It was operated by Mr. T. Palmer & Co. Seating was provided for 578, with 465 in the stalls and 113 in the former chapel gallery which became the cinema balcony.

In later years the Electrochord sound system was replaced by a Western Electric(WE) sound system. By 1956 it had been equipped with CinemaScope. The Gainsborough Cinema was closed on 22nd October 1966 with Jacques Dumesnil in “Love for Sale”(La Tricheuse) & Horst Frank in “The Head”. It was demolished in 1981.
