Royal Cinema

In Castletown, Isle of Man, a roller skating rink, which had been built by Mr Cubbon and his brother and had opened in 1924, was converted into the Cosy Cinema in 1930. By then, it was operated by Ramsey Amusements Ltd.

The Cosy Cinema closed in 1959, but was acquired by Neston Cinema Ltd and re-opened, as the Royal Cinema, on 3rd June 1963. The opening films were “Doctor No”, starring Sean Connery, and Elvis Presley in “Girls! Girls! Girls!”. Sadly, this proved to be very short lived, and the cinema closed permanently in June 1964.

Presumably not coincidentally, that same month, the building was acquired by Castletown Thermostats Ltd, which was already established in adjacent premises.

In the 1980’s, Castletown Thermostats Ltd. changed its name to Strix Ltd. A major employer on the island, in July 1993 the Strix Group moved to new £2m headquarters at Ronaldsway. Their premises in Castletown, including the former cinema, were demolished in August 1993. Housing was built on the site.
