Luxor Filmtheater

The Luxeum Lichtspiele was opened in 1910 with 250-seats. It was operated by Hoffmeister & Vollmer. In 1926 it was re-named Kammer Lichtspiele and was operated by Richard Brannath. Around 1932 a Klangfilm sound system was installed. The cinema was destroyed after 1942 by Allied bombs during World War II.

On 18th October 1951 a new cinema opened and was named Luxor Filmtheater. It was a first-run cinema and many premier screenings took place. It was designed by architects Bern Gutmann & Ernst Hollemeyer with 800-seats in orchestra and balcony levels. The auditorium colours were red & gold. The screen curtain was silver. The opening attraction was “Fanfare of Love” (Fanfaren der Liebe) directed by Kurt Hoffmann and starring Dieter Borsch & Georg Thomalla. (In 1959 director Billy Wilder made the re-make “Some Like it Hot” starring Marilyn Monroe, Tony Curtis & Jack Lemmon).

In 1956 a CinemaScope screen was installed. The B 8 projectors were by Bauer. In 1961 the Merkur Filmtheaterbetriebe took over the operation. In 1967 it was taken over by the Ufa Theater AG chain and they twinned it in 1980. In 1997 it was multiplexed into screens with a capacity of 250, 123, 69, 77 & 154.

After screening movies at the site for over 90 years, the Luxor Filmtheater was closed in 2001.
