Al F. Gravel opened a barber shop in downtown Goodland in 1887. Hearing customers comment about having a theatre in town numerous times, Gravel bought a building and converted it to a theatre, Gravel’s Theatre.
The Gravel Theatre opened in 1911 with legit theatrical productions and vaudeville. But he soon found that the town wanted films and Gravel’s became a full-time silent motion picture house.
Gravel converted the venue to sound and travelled the county advertising the theatre until retiring 1947. His son-in-law Hurshal Stutesman took on the operation for about three years. He closed the Gravel Theatre on June 1, 1950 with Bob Cummings in “Paid in Full”. The theatre became an auction house until 1954. It then was converted for use by the Better Spring and Transmission Company.
