The Gem Theatre was Crystal Lake’s most popular theatre before the rise of the nearby El Tovar Theatre in 1929.

The Gem Theatre opened in 1909 as Crystal Lake’s first moving-picture and theatre house in the city. The Gem Theatre was formerly a Harmony Hall, located in the north section of downtown at the time. One of the most popular owners was the former Star Theatre proprietor and later the owner of the Gem Theatre R.W. Gracy (who also closed the Crystal Theatre on February 22nd, 1917). The Gem Theatre closed its doors for the final time on May 30th, 1929 (just almost a month before the El Tovar Theatre opened its doors).

On July 11th, 1929, Young & Young (who were both former employees after R.W. Gracy took the job) purchased the theatre with Z.H. Osmun, have later commenced to remodel and converted into a modern store, and both Seaman & Hayford took the contract on the former Gem Theatre building’s remodel.
