Is this definitely a Rapp and Rapp? I ask because Cornelius died in 1926, George in 1942. If it opened in 1949, they were both gone.
1951 aerial photo uploaded here.
I used to ride my bicyle there from the southeast side of Chicago in the early 70’s and sneak in the exit, until they figured out that trick! I went there the legal way until the late ‘70s. I would estimate it closed around 1981. (RIP)
We used to go here just about every other weekend in the 60s. We would have 4-5 family cars lined up. It was cheap for the family(4 kids). We had a great time in the play area. Didnt care about the movies unless they were funny
My Dad helped build and run his drive in whioch was sold to I believe to Ben Kolhberg in the late 60’s. I think it was last open in the late 70’s but I’ll find out. I spent many Sat nights there watching movies until we passed out.
Oh yeah, I remember going to this place as a kid every time a new Elvis movie came out (at least three times a year?). We would play on the swings up front until the movie started. I seem to remember that there was always a guy there with a pet skunk. It was a hit with the kids.
Does anyone know the official date of closure for the Hammond, Indiana 41 Outdoor Theater?
