Hale Keaka Theatre

This vintage movie house opened in 1926 as the Lanai Theatre with 153-seats. It was closed in the 1990’s. After an extensive $4 million renovation it reopened on December 20, 2014 as a twin screen theatre, each screen has 91-seats. Both screens are now equipped with luxury recliner seats, air conditioning, and modern digital sound and projection. It has been renamed Hale Keaka Theatre, and it continues to screen first-run films in an intimate setting.

On Wednesday, March 20, 1996, I was the projectionist for a special screening of “Words, Earth & Aloha” (1995), a film by Eddie and Myrna Kamae. Because the film was in the 16mm format, we used my projector to show the film. The small theater was packed with 70 people. Before the screening, Kamae, along with Claybourne “Braddah Smitty” Smith, performed a few songs. A magical evening for everybody.
